Earlier, we wrote down your mission statement. This is the mountain that you are currently climbing or, as Jim Collins puts it, your company's Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG). Once you have your mission outlined, the next step is obviously to answer the great big question in the room, how? This is where strategy comes in, but what exactly is strategy?
Strategy: how you plan to achieve your mission
It's really not that complicated. Undoubtedly you already have lots of ideas about the methods you will use to accomplish your mission. Before we commit to certain strategic initiatives, let's dive into identifying your strategic focus. Start filling out the Strategic Focus Template PDF. Start by listing out all the strategic priorities and opportunities that you have identified so far while working through the StacDek Framework. Remember, every strategic priority has to be in line with your vision.
Next, narrow that list down to the top 3 to 5. You can determine the top priorities and opportunities by choosing the ones on your list that will help you accomplish your mission most effectively and in the shortest time frame possible. Write your top 3-5 strategic priorities in the bottom box titled Strategic Summary.
Now look back through the list of strategic priorities and opportunities that you made in the box above. Is there anything absolutely critical that didn't make it in the Strategic Summary Box? When you are confident that your strategic summary covers the most important priorities for your business, then you can write that list in the strategies box on the StacDek Business Plan Canvas. If you can't summarize your strategy in 3-5 priorities, then go ahead and make a list a little longer to include all the essentials. However, you should come back to this and get feedback from our team because, for most businesses having more than five strategic priorities is indicative of a growth barrier.
